PROFESSIONAL BIOGRAPHY
Dr Panu Maijala (M) was born in Kuopio, Finland, in 1970. He received the degrees of Doctor of Science in Technology from the Tampere University of Technology in 2014, and Master of Science in Technology in 1999 from Helsinki University of Technology (HUT), Finland. His doctoral thesis dealt with atmospheric acoustics and Master's thesis dealt with evaluation of sound quality.
Since 1999, Dr Maijala has been working at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd in many fields of acoustics and audio signal processing, including the topics of acoustic surveillance, aeroacoustics, electroacoustics, environmental acoustics, noise, psychoacoustics, and sound quality. He has authored or co-authored several books, journal articles, reviewed reports, and over 70 other publications on acoustics in total. He is member of many associations, committees, and scientific boards. He has been teaching acoustics in both Helsinki and Tampere Universities of Technology between 1998 - 2017.
Formerly, he has been working at ABB during 1992-1995 as a designer of electromechanical parts and a foreman, between 1996-1999 in the Laboratory of Acoustics and Audio Signal Processing (at HUT).
On the field of music, he graduated from the Music Academy of Kuopio in 1989 and he is a semi-professional musician. He plays some stringed, woodwind, brass, percussion, and keyboard instruments. His hobbies include playing in a band, signing in a choir, and voluntary work.
He has been promoted as an officer and awarded several times. The highest accolade is the Gold Medal of Merit of the Reserve Officers' Federation (RUL am.) issued by the Minister of Defence and his military rank is Captain.
